F1i Look Back: Back in 1986, the reason Pirelli painted the sidewall of its tyres with Benetton had nothing to do with compound type and all to do with creating a visual effect.


In today’s Formula 1, the distinguishing sidewall colour of Pirelli’s tyres identifies the rubber’s compound, but it was just a visual gimick back in 1986.
